Wine and Cheese Tasting

Featuring the Noel Jewkes Quartet

Well the football season is over, and it's time to find something else that's fun to do on Sunday afternoons.  How about enjoying great music, nice company and good wine?

Jazz and Java has been a special program for all who have attended.  The music has been wonderful, the camaraderie among audience and musicians delightful and the refreshments just great.

We have been trying different formats in an attempt to better fit our audience's interests, schedules and tastes.  The coffee and pastries format has been well received, as was the "Plus" format with added champagne, fruit, bagels and smoked salmon.  Also, you have also told us that you would prefer an event later in the day.

So, we're keeping what works and changing what will make it better.  We plan to stick with the enhanced "Plus" format, and will run the Jazz and Java Plus sessions from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons.

Our second session will be held on Sunday, March 2nd.  This will be another in our joint events co-sponsored by the Writers Center and the American Institute of Wine and Food, both non-profit organizations. The proceeds from this event will go to the Writers Center and the AIWF Scholarship Fund, both worthy causes.  To learn more about this event, and the AIWF, visit their web site at www.AIWFNorCal.org.

This co-sponsored format was very popular when we tried it last December. This time we will be offering a special premium wine and cheese tasting... selections to be chosen by the AIWF.  Details will be provided later, or you can check the AIWF web site.

Our featured artists on March 2nd will be the Noel Jewkes Quartet with Noel on sax, Leonard Thompson on piano, Vince Lateano on drums and Michael Zisman on bass.  Noel is one of the Bay Area's musical treasures, and together with some of the best musicians in San Francisco, he promises a performance you will not want to miss.

Noel and his friends will perform contemporary interpretations from the start of the jazz era and beyond.  In this intimate new jazz venue, the artists converse with the audience, sharing the music's context and history. You will enjoy the music of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Miles Davis, and such contemporary players as Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter and others.

Seating is limited, and you can expect the March 2nd session to sell out, so reserve your place early by mailing your check to:

All sessions are conducted at the Writers Center, located at 1323 Fourth Street, between C and D streets, in downtown San Rafael, above the Folk Art Gallery. Their phone number is (415) 454-7171.

These are wonderful events for music lovers of all ages, or for folks that are just looking for a fun and interesting way to spend a casual and relaxed Sunday afternoon.  I hope you will join us, and spread the word to all of your friends.  Thanks again for your support.
