Sunday, October 12, 2003
Noon to 4:00 p.m.

We will start with fruit, cheese, salads, bubbly and still beverages, and other good things to nibble on while waiting for the first oysters to make the scene. Then we'll start the fire and begin cooking oysters and clams in a host of delicious ways.  While waiting, you can learn to shuck, or if you already know how, begin shucking on your own or if you prefer, just watch, and enjoy the other guests, the wonderful view of Tomales Bay, lots of things to nibble on, and of course, what we all came for, the oysters.

Variations will include Beth's Pernod-infused Oysters Rockefeller, Maggie's version of Oysters Ran, (oysters baked on the half shell with Wakame, a type of seaweed, and topped with a spicy aioli), Maggie's Thai mignonette and more. We also will be serving Beverley's succulent steamed clams with garlic, wine and other stuff, and clams in Sapporo Beer, oriental style. We'll probably try a few other creative ways to prepare them too. In fact, if you have an oyster or clam recipe you want to contribute, send it to us at JoeAgro@comcast.net, and we'll consider adding the ingredients to our shopping list.

Of course there will be the classics: oysters placed on the fire until they open, then dipped in melted butter; and raw oysters, frosty cold in their own liquor, simply topped with lemon, or lime, or black pepper, or Tabasco, or a mignonette, or any combination that strikes your fancy. But if you are a purist, just slurp it down along with its delicious ice-cold liquor, au natural clearly the most elegant way to enjoy an oyster.

We will also be serving a variety of wonderful goodies, from both land and sea, for those of you that want to eat something other than oysters or clams.

Tomales Bay may be a bit of a drive, but it is definitely worth the trip!  It's a lovely drive through the redwoods and by the water. The Tomales Bay Oyster Company is located at 15479 Highway 1 in West Marin, about a 45-minute drive from the Golden Gate Bridge. Parking is free. Car-pooling is encouraged.

To get there, take Hwy 101 to the Lucas Valley Road exit, and follow it west for about 11 miles to the dead end at Nicasio Valley Road. Turn right and go to Petaluma / Point Reyes Road and take a left toward Point Reyes.  Follow around the reservoir and across a small bridge to Highway 1.  Go right on Highway 1 and proceed about 5 miles to the Tomales Bay Oyster Company. Watch for the white picket fence on the left.

For those who would prefer to be driven to this year's Slurp and Burp, we have arranged to have a bus take you to the event and to help get you into a party mood, champagne will be served on the bus. This should help make your participation easier and more enjoyable, and it promises to be a fun trip

Our bus will leave the Manzanita Commuter lot, just over the Golden Gate Bridge, at 10:30 am, and will pick up additional passengers at the Lucas Valley Commuter parking lot, in Northern Marin, at approximately 11:00 am. Expected arrival at the Tomales Bay Oyster Company should be shortly before noon. The bus will depart for home at about 4:00 pm, getting you back to your pick up points by approximately 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm, respectively.

To reach the Manzanita lot, located under Highway 101 in Mill Valley, take Highway 101 north to the Stinson Beach exit.  Proceed under the freeway and make the first left turn into the parking lot.

The Lucas Valley lot is also under Highway 101, in Novato. Take 101 north to the Smith Ranch Road exit. Turn right, and right again into the parking lot.

Parking is free at both locations.

Seating on the bus is by reservation only. The charge for your round trip transportation is just $30. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve your seat along with your reservation for this event.
